INDIANAPOLIS | Central Indiana gets a calmer and more comfortable Tuesday than the earlier draft suggested, with sunshine, a high near 78°F and no official signal for widespread afternoon thunderstorms in Indianapolis.

The National Weather Service forecast for Indianapolis calls for sunny conditions today, a high near 78°F, and northeast wind around 6 to 11 mph with gusts as high as 20 mph. Tonight is forecast to be clear with a low around 54°F and east wind around 5 to 9 mph.

That means the earlier language about highs in the mid-80s and afternoon thunderstorms should be removed for the Indianapolis daily brief. Based on the current NWS forecast, today is better described as sunny, comfortable and mostly dry.

Wednesday also looks sunny with a high near 81°F. Warmer air builds later in the week, with Friday expected to be mostly sunny and near 85°F before shower chances return late Friday night and continue into parts of the weekend.

For commuters, the morning is straightforward: cool enough for a light layer early, then mild and sunny by afternoon. Northeast winds may be noticeable at times, especially in open areas or for cyclists.

For schools, outdoor workers and event planners, heat risk is lower than it would be on a humid mid-80s day, but sun exposure still matters. Sunscreen, water and shade breaks remain useful for longer outdoor work or practices.

Flood warnings remain in place on parts of the White River in southwest Indiana, but Indianapolis itself is not under a severe thunderstorm forecast in the current NWS city forecast. River flooding is handled separately in the Severe Weather Alert row.

The useful planning summary: sunny today, high near 78°F, breezy northeast gusts near 20 mph, clear tonight near 54°F, warmer by Friday, and better rain chances late Friday night into the weekend.

CGN will update if NWS changes the forecast or issues new alerts.
