BENGALURU | India's services sector expanded at its fastest pace in six months in May, according to Reuters, but the country's broader business outlook remains exposed to fuel costs, export uncertainty and monsoon risk.

Reuters reported that the HSBC India Services Purchasing Managers' Index, compiled by S&P Global, rose to 59.8 in May from 58.8 in April. A reading above 50 indicates expansion, and India's services PMI has remained above that threshold since mid-2021.

The underlying details were mixed. Reuters reported that new business rose to its highest level since November 2025, helped by e-commerce, entertainment and IT, while export orders grew only slightly and hiring continued at a modest pace.

The inflation picture is equally important. Reuters reported separately that India has warned weaker monsoon rains and fuel-price pressures could lift inflation. The monsoon is a major support for agriculture, water supplies and rural demand, and a weak season can affect food prices, incomes and consumer confidence.

For businesses, the message is that demand is still present, especially domestically, but planning assumptions need to include energy volatility and weather-linked risks.

India's services momentum is real. The question is whether it can continue if fuel and food pressures squeeze household budgets.

What this means

This matters because services strength can support growth, employment and urban demand, but a weak monsoon or higher energy costs could quickly change the inflation and consumer-spending picture.
