STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. | Five people were killed and dozens were injured after a bus struck vehicles in slowed traffic on Interstate 95 in Virginia, turning an overnight work-zone backup into a deadly multi-vehicle crash.

ABC News reported that the crash happened around 2:35 a.m. Friday on I-95 south in Stafford County, about 45 miles south of Washington. Virginia State Police said traffic had slowed for a work zone when the bus failed to slow and struck a Chevrolet Suburban. The crash then involved additional vehicles, including an Acura SUV that caught fire.

Authorities said four of the five people killed were in the Acura: a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy, all from Greenfield, Massachusetts. A fifth victim, a 25-year-old woman, was in the Suburban. ABC reported that 44 people were hospitalized, including three with critical injuries.

The bus was traveling from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina, and was carrying about 34 people. Investigators are reviewing the driver's commercial license and training records, and police said charges are pending.
