INDIANAPOLIS | Indianapolis-area shoppers who buy prepared foods from Whole Foods or order groceries online should check their refrigerators after a recall tied to an undeclared shellfish allergen.

Kettle Cuisine of Lynn, Massachusetts, recalled 24-ounce clear plastic cups of Whole Foods Market Kitchen Minestrone Soup because the product may contain undeclared shrimp, according to a company announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall matters most for people with allergies to crustacean shellfish, who could face a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they eat the affected soup.

The recalled soup is packaged in a 24-ounce clear plastic cup marked with lot code 1762181 and a Use By date of 05/27/26 on the top rim of the cup. The product also carries UPC 099482502065 on the back label, according to the FDA notice.

The FDA-posted announcement listed retail distribution in multiple states and Washington, D.C. Indiana was not listed among the retail-store distribution states in the notice. The local caution still matters because the product was also sold nationwide through online sales on the Whole Foods and Amazon websites.

That means Indianapolis-area shoppers who ordered the soup online, had groceries delivered or brought the product home after travel should check the label before eating it. Consumers who purchased the affected product are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

Food-allergen recalls can be easy to miss because the product may look normal and the risk depends on what is missing from the label. For shoppers with shellfish allergies, the important details are the product name, cup size, lot code, use-by date and UPC.

What this means

Indiana was not listed among the retail-store distribution states in the FDA notice, but online sales make this a practical local reminder. Check the lot code, use-by date and UPC before eating the soup.
