INDIANAPOLIS | The Indianapolis 500 is not only a race this weekend. It is also one of the city’s largest music, culture and hospitality events, and the Snake Pit is again part of that identity.

The Associated Press reported that Rob Gronkowski has been named grand marshal of the Indianapolis 500 Snake Pit for the second straight year. INDYCAR also announced that the former NFL tight end and FOX NFL analyst would return for the Sunday event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Snake Pit gives race weekend a different audience lane: electronic dance music fans, younger visitors, out-of-town groups and people who experience the Indy 500 as a festival as much as a sporting event. The event takes place during the largest single-day sporting event on the planet, according to IMS ticket information.

That culture piece matters for Indianapolis because race weekend stretches across restaurants, hotels, downtown venues, Speedway businesses, transportation services and neighborhood activity. It is a civic event, tourism event and sports event at the same time.

For fans, the practical note is to plan ahead. IMS states that Snake Pit attendees must be at least 18, and tickets, wristbands, identification, parking and weather should all be handled before race morning.

What this means

For Indianapolis, the Snake Pit shows how the Indy 500 has become more than a motorsports event. It brings together sports, music, tourism and local business activity across one of the city’s biggest weekends.
