TAIPEI | Taiwan is trying to turn uncertainty after President Donald Trump’s Beijing summit into an opening for direct communication with Washington.

Reuters reported that Taiwan would welcome a direct call between Trump and President Lai Ching-te after Trump’s remarks about Taiwan, arms sales and independence raised concern in Taipei. A direct call would be symbolically significant because formal U.S.-Taiwan diplomatic relations ended in 1979.

The issue is not only protocol. Taiwan depends on credible U.S. support while facing increasing military, political and economic pressure from Beijing. Any ambiguity from Washington is closely watched by Taipei, Beijing and Asian allies.

Trump’s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping placed Taiwan back at the center of U.S.-China diplomacy. Beijing considers Taiwan part of China and has warned against moves toward formal independence. Taiwan’s government says the island is already self-governed and does not accept Beijing’s sovereignty claim.

U.S. policy has long relied on strategic ambiguity: supporting Taiwan’s defense while not explicitly committing to every wartime scenario. Trump’s remarks have created fresh questions about how that ambiguity would operate during his second term.

Taiwan’s openness to a call is therefore a political signal. Taipei wants reassurance, but it also wants to avoid appearing provocative. A call could strengthen communication; it could also anger Beijing.

The next question is whether Trump follows through with a call and whether any conversation produces reassurance without triggering a new escalation cycle.

What this means

This matters because Taiwan’s security depends heavily on clear communication among Washington, Taipei and Beijing.

A direct Trump-Lai call could reassure Taiwan, but it would also carry diplomatic risk if Beijing treats it as a shift in U.S. policy.
